Lija forms part of the three villages, Attard and Hal Balzan and you can catch a bus from Valletta (numbers: 41 42 43), which should only take you 30 minutes. With a population of approximately 3000, the village is a tranquil and safe place.
Upon entrance, one can view a beautiful Oleander tree lined avenue leading to the Parish Church, dedicated to our Saviour. The Baroque Parish church was designed by Ganni Barbara with ceiling paintings by the famous Giuseppe Cali. The Feast of the Transfiguration of our Lord is celebrated between 31st July till the 6th of August, best know for its pyrotechnics and firework display. Lija is also renowned for its citrus trees and citrus flavored honey. Lija’s motto is ‘Suavi Fructu Rubeo’ meaning ‘with tasty fruit blossom’, where an annual citrus festival is held in January.
Full of narrow winding streets and pretty alleys, featuring traditional buildings with characteristic Maltese balconies. The village is also host to the 18th century Villa Preziosi, situated in the northern part of Lija this baroque style prominent house is currently owned by the government. Megalithic tombs were unearthed in the late 19th century.
